A Celebration of Regional Partnerships
These posters were showcased at Revisiting Aboriginal Wellbeing – A Celebration of Regional Partnerships. Each describe projects and programs that focus on the wellbeing of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, paying particular attention to the cultural determinants of health. Thank you to all who submitted an abstract.

Baribunmani Wanyi Ngay
Baribunmani Wanyi Ngay or Bari for short, is the youth program run by the University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH). The longterm program is for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander high school students in Year 8 to Year 12. The program shows local Goori students that there are many pathways that lead to a career in health, you just need to know how to access them.
Art on Bundjalung Country
The Art on Bundjalung Country Project is an arts and health project delivered by artists to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living and working on Bundjalung Country. The project aims to improve health and wellbeing by connecting Aboriginal people to culture through creative art activities.
Aboriginal Evidence Building Project with ABCARE
Their Futures Matter (TFM) is a landmark reform of the NSW Government to improve outcomes for vulnerable children, young people and their families and to develop a clearer picture of what is being achieved in the sector and what works.
In 2018, TFM piloted the Aboriginal Evidence Building Partnership (AEBP) to begin to build an evidence base of promising programs that anecdotally, are seen to be improving outcomes for Aboriginal children, young people, families and communities. The AEBP partnered with ABCARE and evaluation and evidence building experts to strengthen the capacity of ABCARE to collect meaningful and measurable data to demonstrate program impacts.
Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan Aboriginal Corporation
“Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan” translates to “Two Path Strong” in the Gumbaynggirr language. It thereby sets the goal of the corporation, which is to ensure that the local Aboriginal community , in particular youth, are “two path strong” – strong in culture and strong in education.
An Aboriginal Cultural Safety & Security Framework for Mainstream Healthcare Governance - Commitix Pty Ltd
The Aboriginal Cultural Safety & Security Framework (ACSSF) project investigated how mainstream healthcare organisational contexts can become culturally safe and secure and thereby lead to improved health outcomes of Aboriginal people on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales.
Dream Bigger - Creative & Performing Arts
The Dream Bigger program aims to improve the social and emotional wellbeing of young people by creating connection within supportive environments, creative and performing arts.
One Stop Shop - Rekindling the Spirit
The One Stop Shop program is the counselling aspect of Rekindling the Spirit – a community based organisation run by Aboriginal people for families based in Lismore and surrounding areas. RTS operates with a holistic approach, working with Aboriginal families and communities to bring about positive and lasting change.
Aboriginal Go 4 Fun
Aboriginal Go4Fun is a free culturally adapted version of the evidence based Go4Fun obesity treatment program, which aims to promote healthy eating, physical activity and behaviour change strategies for children aged seven to 13 years, who are above a healthy weight and their families. Aboriginal Go4Fun offers 10 weeks of practical education on nutrition, physical activity and behavior change strategies over two hours per week after school for Aboriginal families.
Health From the Grass Roots - University Centre for Rural Health
Health from the Grass Roots aims to give voice to local Aboriginal community members (living in Bundjalung and Yaegl country) from Tweed Heads to Grafton, about what they see as priorities for Aboriginal health and wellbeing. Aboriginal staff at the University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH) in the North Coast region are leading this work; gathering community ideas to inform service provision and research.
Integrated Aboriginal Chronic Care - Northern NSW Local Health District
The Integrated Aboriginal Chronic Care (IACC) project was developed in response to the identified need for a culturally appropriate service delivery model of chronic disease management and rehabilitation for Aboriginal clients. The project aimed to achieve a single point of entry for Aboriginal clients with a coordinated focus on the needs of the client to provide services that are more accessible for the Aboriginal community.
IPROWD - NSW Police and TAFE NSW
The 12- week IPROWD program is a specialist programme developed by the NSW Police Force and TAFE NSW. The purpose of the IPROWD programme is to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in gaining a qualification, develop skills and confidence to succeed in applying for a career with the NSW Police Force or other Justice and Emergency Services.
Journey of Knowing for Wellbeing - Galambila AHS
Journey of Knowing for Wellbeing is a mental health project at Galambila. It was established through consultation with the local Gumbaynggirr community and developed into an information guide to connect Aboriginal people and services across the Coffs Coast Local Government Area.
Justice Advocacy Service - IDRS
The Justice Advocacy Service (JAS) supports people with cognitive impairment in contact with the NSW criminal justice system, including as victims, witnesses and suspects/defendants to exercise their rights and fully participate in the process. The service provides support to both adults and young people with cognitive impairment.
Health Kidney Collaborative - Mid North Coast Local Health District
The goal of the Health Kidney Collaborative is to improve renal primary health care for Aboriginal people in the Mid North Coast Local Health District and to reduce the progression to end stage kidney disease and prevent the forecasted renal disease and dialysis tsunami.
Lighthouse Hospital Project - Mid North Coast Local Health District
The aim of the Lighthouse Hospital Project (LHP) is to reduce the incidence of discharge against medical advice by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples presenting at hospital with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS).
Licensed on the Road Driver Education - ACE Colleges
Licensed on the Road is an award-winning program dedicated to helping Aboriginal people get a driving license. It began in 2005 as a grass roots idea by ACE Community Colleges in response to the high number of driving offences and road fatalities that included Aboriginal people.
NDIS Coordination - Galambila Aboriginal Health Service
As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with a disability early to improve their outcomes later in life. Galambila aims to provide a culturally appropriate service to the local Aboriginal community.
Ngalingah Mijung Dubai’s Our Happy Women
Ngalingah Mijung Dubai’s which translates in the Bundjalung language to Our Happy Women (OHW), emerged in 2015 as a response to the needs for Aboriginal women in the Northern NSW to come together in a culturally safe and supportive environment. OHW has proven to be extremely effective in fostering leadership skills, strengthening culture, and reinforcing women’s networks and inter-generational collaboration.
Ngunya Jarjum
Ngunya Jarjum was established in 1996 by Bundjalung elders and community members to address the crisis and need for more Aboriginal kinship and foster carers to keep Aboriginal children in family, on Country and in culture.
The organisation has grown from a small Aboriginal foster care support agency to one of the largest Aboriginal community controlled designated agencies under the NSW Office of Children’s Guardian to provide culturally appropriate care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out of home care within the Bundjalung Nation encompassing the Clarence, Richmond and Tweed Valley areas.
Solid Mob Tackling Indigenous Smoking - Bullinah Aboriginal Health Service
Bullinah Aboriginal Health Service has hosted the Tackling Indigenous Smoking Program since October 2012. The regional program operates across the entire Northern Rivers Region of Northern NSW. SolidMOB Tackling Indigenous Smoking programs aim to educate, encourage and empower our Indigenous communities to make healthy lifestyle choices.
Stock Camp
Stock Camp is aimed as an ends based alternative education system to engage youth who are disengaged from mainstream education. This project is an on-property education and training concept designed to intervene in the descent into anti-social behaviour and as a diversion from incarceration or suicide. Whilst not a new concept it is unique in design with the end goal having participants becoming socially ready to achieve employment.
Tweed Goorie Go Getters
Tweed Goorie Go Getters healthy lifestyle program was established in 2012 and is now into its 8th successful year. During this time the program has grown and now has over 40 community members and their families attending. The program includes specialised education sessions to accomplish the aims outlined in the Aims and Objectives section.
Warruwi Gambling Help
The Warruwi Gambling Help Program works with communities to promote a healthy approach to gambling and seeking help. We provide face-to-face counselling services for Aboriginal people at various locations and raise awareness of gambling in Aboriginal communities.
